Job Title: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH)
Location: Annapolis, MD
Job Summary:
The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) provides specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring access to the general education curriculum in a way that meets their individual learning needs. The DHH teacher collaborates with general and special education staff, families, audiologists, interpreters, and other related service providers to promote educational success and communication access.

- Full Time | 37.5 hrs./week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct and/or consultative educational services to students with hearing loss as specified in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Assess students’ academic levels and communication needs using appropriate tools and methodologies.
- Develop and implement lesson plans tailored to each student’s mode of communication and educational goals (e.g., auditory-oral, sign language, total communication).
- Support development of language, auditory skills, speech, reading, and academic achievement.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to modify and adapt instructional materials and classroom environments.
- Serve as a member of multidisciplinary teams, contributing to IEP development, progress monitoring, and annual reviews.
- Provide guidance and support to parents, helping them understand and advocate for their child’s educational and communication needs.
- Train school personnel on hearing loss, assistive listening devices, classroom accommodations, and inclusive practices.
- Monitor the functioning of hearing technology (e.g., hearing aids, FM/DM systems, cochlear implants) and ensure proper use in school settings.
- Travel between school sites as necessary to serve students.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or Special Education with a DHH emphasis.
- Valid teaching credential for Deaf and Hard of Hearing issued by the appropriate state agency.
- Knowledge of various communication modalities (e.g., ASL, Cued Speech, oral communication).
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is preferred or required depending on assignment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Experience working with diverse student populations is a plus.
