Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Duties

  • Provide individualized instruction to students with visual impairments in orientation and mobility skills

  • Teach safe and effective travel techniques across school, home, and community environments

  • Collaborate with teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), families, and multidisciplinary teams to support student independence

  • Conduct assessments and develop instructional plans tailored to student needs

  • Train students in the use of assistive technology and mobility devices such as canes

  • Monitor progress and document student performance

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal requirements, including IDEA and Section 504

Federal and State Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited program

  • Current Texas state certification/licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (or eligibility)

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in mobility instruction and assistive technology

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

  • Fingerprinting and background clearance as required by Texas school districts
