Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Duties

Provide individualized instruction to students with visual impairments in orientation and mobility skills

Teach safe and effective travel techniques across school, home, and community environments

Collaborate with teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), families, and multidisciplinary teams to support student independence

Conduct assessments and develop instructional plans tailored to student needs

Train students in the use of assistive technology and mobility devices such as canes

Monitor progress and document student performance

Ensure compliance with state and federal requirements, including IDEA and Section 504
Federal and State Requirements
-
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited program
-
Current Texas state certification/licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (or eligibility)

Knowledge of evidence-based practices in mobility instruction and assistive technology
-
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
-
Fingerprinting and background clearance as required by Texas school districts
