Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Job Duties

Provide direct and consultative instructional services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing

Adapt and modify curriculum to support student access to learning
-
Use a variety of communication methods, including ASL, auditory-oral, or total communication, depending on student needs

Collaborate with teachers, interpreters, administrators, and families to promote student success

Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals

Participate in IEP meetings and provide expertise on accommodations and modifications
-
Support the use and understanding of assistive listening devices when applicable
-
Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines
Federal and State Requirements
-
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Deaf Education or a related field from an accredited program
-
Current Tennessee state certification/licensure as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (or eligibility)

Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred

Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and other applicable education laws

Strong communication, instructional, and collaboration skills

Fingerprinting and background clearance as required by Tennessee school districts
