Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Job Duties

Provide orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments

Develop and implement individualized training plans to support independent navigation
-
Teach students safe and effective travel techniques across school and community environments

Collaborate with teachers, families, and related service providers to support student success

Monitor and document student progress, adjusting interventions as needed

Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal requirements
Federal and State Requirements
-
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or related field
-
Current Texas certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist required

Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and other applicable education laws

Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
-
Fingerprinting and background clearance as required by Texas school districts
