This position offers experienced DHH teachers the opportunity to provide critical language and literacy instruction to students with hearing loss through engaging virtual learning experiences. You'll work with students developing communication skills while accessing grade-level curriculum.
Position Specifics
Teaching approximately 37.5 hours per week, you'll serve a caseload of 12-18 students across elementary and middle school grade levels. Your instruction focuses on developing language, literacy, and auditory skills while supporting students' access to the general education curriculum. Services are delivered one-on-one and in small groups through video conferencing platforms, allowing for intensive, individualized instruction tailored to each student's communication modality and learning needs.
Core Responsibilities
Your role encompasses specialized instruction specifically designed for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. You'll develop and implement IEPs targeting language development, literacy skills, auditory training, and speech skills as appropriate. Daily planning includes creating lessons that accommodate various communication modalities—spoken language, sign language, or simultaneous communication. You'll monitor auditory equipment functionality, collaborate with audiologists and speech pathologists, and provide consultation to general education teachers regarding accommodations and modifications. Regular parent training ensures families support communication development at home.
Essential Credentials
Candidates must maintain active licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and hard of hearing valid in New Mexico. A Master's degree in Deaf Education or related field is required, supplemented by a minimum of two years teaching experience in school programs serving students with hearing loss. Knowledge of language acquisition in children with hearing loss, familiarity with various communication philosophies, and experience working with students using hearing aids or cochlear implants are essential.
Remote Teaching Requirements
Virtual DHH instruction requires strong technical skills including proficiency with video platforms optimized for visual communication. Your home workspace needs professional lighting, minimal background noise, and reliable high-speed internet. Experience adapting DHH teaching strategies for teleteaching environments enhances your effectiveness with students learning remotely.
