Peachtree Corners, GA
Soliant Health Schools - Deaf / Hard of Hearing Specialist Contract 11 days ago Apply

VocoVision connects teachers specializing in deaf and hard of hearing education with remote teaching opportunities serving students across the United States. We're actively building our roster of qualified DHH educators who can provide specialized instruction through virtual platforms, expanding access to expert deaf education services.

Teaching Position

This remote teaching position for students who are deaf or hard of hearing encompasses 37.5 hours per week with caseloads ranging from 25-40 students depending on grade levels and service intensity. You'll deliver specialized instruction addressing language development, literacy acquisition, mathematics, science, and social studies while ensuring curriculum access through appropriate communication methodologies. Students may use various communication approaches including American Sign Language, listening and spoken language, or total communication, requiring flexibility and expertise across modalities. The virtual format allows you to serve geographically dispersed students who might otherwise lack access to qualified teachers of the deaf.

Instructional Duties

Your teaching encompasses developing lesson plans that simultaneously address state academic standards and the unique language learning needs of deaf and hard of hearing students. You'll provide direct instruction in language arts with emphasis on vocabulary development, reading comprehension strategies, and written expression skills specific to deaf learners. Content area instruction requires extensive visual supports, modified texts, and explicit teaching of background knowledge often incidentally acquired through hearing. You'll administer formal and informal language assessments to monitor acquisition of both conversational and academic language proficiency. Collaboration with educational interpreters ensures they understand lesson objectives and specialized vocabulary. Consultation with general education teachers supports inclusion success through discussion of accommodations and communication strategies. You'll participate in IEP meetings contributing expertise on appropriate goals, present levels, and services. Regular family communication addresses student progress, discusses communication development at home, and provides resources about deaf culture and community.

Essential Qualifications

  • Current Ohio teaching license with Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement
  • Master's degree in Deaf Education or Special Education: Deaf/Hard of Hearing
  • Two or more years teaching students who are deaf/hard of hearing in schools
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language and/or other communication approaches in deaf education
  • Knowledge of hearing assistive technology including FM systems, cochlear implants, and hearing aids
  • Strong skills in virtual instruction delivery and educational technology integration
  • Appropriate lighting and video setup for clear visual communication
  • Dedicated workspace with reliable internet connection

Virtual Instruction for DHH Students

Remote teaching for deaf and hard of hearing students effectively utilizes technology to maximize visual access to instruction. You'll employ screen sharing for visual presentations, use digital whiteboards for interactive lessons, and provide recorded content allowing students repeated viewing to support comprehension. Many students benefit from the ability to adjust their own camera angles, see captions when using spoken language, and access visual materials without classroom distractions. The virtual environment often facilitates easier incorporation of multimedia resources, deaf role models through guest speakers, and connections to the broader deaf community.
