DHH Teacher for Virtual Instruction | Detroit, Michigan
VocoVision connects specialized Deaf and Hard of Hearing teachers with remote positions serving students throughout Michigan. This virtual teaching opportunity allows you to provide essential instruction and support to students with hearing loss while working from your home environment, using video technology to deliver accessible, engaging lessons tailored to each student's unique communication needs and learning profile.
Position Details
This role typically encompasses 35-37 hours per week, serving students from elementary through high school grades who have varying degrees of hearing loss and utilize different communication modalities including spoken language, sign language, and simultaneous communication approaches. Your caseload will generally include 40-50 students requiring specialized instruction in language development, auditory skill building, speech reading, and access to the curriculum. You'll deliver both direct instruction and consultation services through virtual platforms, ensuring students receive the accommodations and support necessary for academic success.
Primary Responsibilities
Your work focuses on developing students' language and literacy skills while providing access to grade-level content across subject areas. You'll deliver specialized instruction targeting vocabulary development, reading comprehension, written expression, and language structure, addressing the language gaps that often result from hearing loss. Lessons incorporate visual supports, captioning, sign language (as appropriate to student communication mode), and multisensory strategies to make content accessible and engaging. Beyond academic instruction, you'll teach auditory skills, speech reading techniques, and self-advocacy competencies that empower students to succeed in mainstream educational environments.
Collaboration forms a critical component of this role. You'll consult regularly with general education teachers about accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies that support students with hearing loss in virtual classrooms. This includes advising on visual supports, captioning requirements, seating considerations, and communication access. You'll work closely with speech language pathologists, audiologists, and interpreters to coordinate comprehensive services addressing each student's needs. IEP development and implementation requires your expertise in determining appropriate goals, services, and accommodations specific to students with hearing loss.
Assessment and progress monitoring ensure students are advancing appropriately. You'll conduct language assessments, evaluate reading levels, monitor auditory skill development, and collect data demonstrating progress toward IEP goals. Regular communication with families provides updates on student achievement, suggests home activities supporting language development, and addresses questions about hearing technology, educational needs, and transition planning.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must hold an active Deaf and Hard of Hearing teaching endorsement or certification in Michigan, along with a Master's degree in Deaf Education or a related field. Two years of experience teaching students with hearing loss in school settings demonstrates your understanding of this specialized population and evidence-based instructional approaches. Knowledge of language development in students with hearing loss, familiarity with various communication modalities, and understanding of hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems) are essential.
Technical Setup
Your home workspace requires reliable high-speed internet, quality video equipment with clear audio, appropriate lighting for visual communication, and a private area for confidential instruction and meetings. Proficiency with virtual teaching platforms, screen sharing, digital curriculum resources, and educational technology supports effective remote instruction. Experience with or willingness to learn assistive technology and captioning systems used by students with hearing loss is necessary.
