Remote Teaching Position for Students with Hearing Loss in Grand Rapids | Michigan Virtual Schools

Grand Rapids, MI
Soliant Health Schools - Teacher of the Deaf / Hard of Hearing Contract 7 days ago Apply

VocoVision seeks qualified Deaf and Hard of Hearing teachers for remote positions supporting Michigan students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This virtual role provides the opportunity to make a profound impact on students' educational journeys, delivering specialized instruction and ensuring communication access while working from the comfort and convenience of your own home office.

As a remote DHH teacher, you'll typically work 36-37.5 hours weekly serving a caseload of approximately 45-55 students with hearing loss ranging from mild to profound across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. These students use diverse communication approaches—some rely on spoken language and listening technology, others use American Sign Language, and many utilize a combination of modalities. Your instruction adapts to each student's communication preferences and IEP goals, providing both direct specialized teaching and consultative support to ensure academic access and success.

Your teaching responsibilities center on developing the language and literacy foundations essential for students with hearing loss to access curriculum and achieve grade-level standards. You'll provide explicit instruction in vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension strategies, and written expression, recognizing that hearing loss often creates language delays requiring targeted intervention. Lessons utilize visual learning strategies, graphic organizers, captioned videos, and interactive digital content that make abstract concepts concrete and accessible. For students using sign language, you'll deliver instruction through ASL while also developing their English literacy skills through reading and writing activities that build bilingual competence.

Content area support ensures students understand the academic material presented in general education classes. You'll pre-teach key vocabulary and concepts before students encounter them in mainstream settings, provide supplementary instruction clarifying difficult content, and reteach material as needed to fill comprehension gaps. Your consultation with general education teachers helps them understand how to effectively include students with hearing loss in virtual classrooms through appropriate accommodations like captioning, visual aids, clear audio, and communication access strategies.

Beyond academics, you'll develop students' self-advocacy skills by teaching them to articulate their communication needs, request accommodations, educate others about hearing loss, and troubleshoot technology issues with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Social-emotional support addresses the unique challenges students with hearing loss face, including feelings of isolation, communication barriers, and identity development related to deaf culture and the hearing world.

IEP management requires you to write comprehensive present levels describing students' language development, academic performance, and functional skills. You'll develop measurable annual goals addressing language, literacy, auditory skills, and self-advocacy while determining appropriate service minutes and accommodations. Participation in IEP meetings involves presenting assessment data, explaining specialized instruction needs, and making recommendations about placement, related services, and assistive technology.

Qualified candidates possess an active Michigan teaching certificate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement, demonstrating your specialized training in this field. Your Master's degree combined with two years of teaching experience with students who are deaf or hard of hearing provides the expertise needed for this specialized role. Strong communication skills in English are required, and proficiency in American Sign Language is highly valued depending on the communication needs of students in your caseload.

Your home teaching environment must include high-speed internet connectivity, professional video conferencing equipment with quality audio and video, adequate lighting for visual communication, and a private space ensuring confidentiality during instruction and meetings. Comfort with technology platforms, digital curriculum materials, and educational software supports engaging virtual instruction.
