Remote Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher - Kalamazoo, MI
VocoVision partners with Michigan school districts to provide specialized instruction for students with hearing loss. We're expanding our network of virtual DHH teachers who deliver high-quality academic and language instruction through remote platforms.
This DHH teacher position involves serving approximately 40-55 students across elementary, middle, and high school levels with a 37.5-hour weekly commitment. You'll provide individualized and small group instruction addressing language development, literacy skills, mathematics, and content area learning for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Your teaching will accommodate diverse communication preferences including students who use hearing aids or cochlear implants with spoken language, students who communicate primarily through American Sign Language, and students who use simultaneous communication approaches.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver standards-aligned virtual instruction that develops language competency and academic knowledge • Create visually accessible learning experiences utilizing captions, visual supports, digital whiteboard tools, and multimedia presentations • Provide explicit instruction in English language structures, vocabulary development, reading comprehension strategies, and written expression • Teach students to use assistive technology effectively and advocate for their communication needs • Assess language proficiency and academic progress through formal and informal measures • Adapt general education curriculum materials to ensure accessibility for students with hearing loss • Develop IEP goals targeting both academic and functional communication skills • Collaborate with general education teachers to support students in inclusive settings • Consult with families on communication strategies and resources for home learning • Partner with audiologists regarding amplification systems and hearing technology • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute DHH expertise to educational planning • Stay informed about advances in assistive technology and evidence-based practices in deaf education
Required Credentials
Current Michigan teaching license with Deaf and Hard of Hearing endorsement • Master's degree required • Minimum 2 years teaching experience with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in school settings • Strong virtual teaching abilities with experience using video platforms for instruction • Knowledge of language development in children with hearing loss and appropriate intervention strategies • Familiarity with various communication philosophies and ability to work with diverse communication approaches • Technology proficiency including learning management systems, video conferencing, and assistive technology for hearing loss • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, and educational teams remotely
Work Environment
You'll teach from your home in Michigan, connecting with students through secure video platforms that ensure clear visual communication. The virtual format requires attention to technical quality including lighting, camera angles, and audio settings to optimize the learning experience for students with hearing loss. You'll need reliable high-speed internet and a professional workspace free from distractions during instructional time.
