Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher (DHH)

Location: Evans, WV

Description: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher (DHH) to join our team in Evans, WV. As a DHH teacher in our school, you will provide specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, empowering them to achieve academic success and develop essential communication skills. Your role will involve collaborating with students, families, and other professionals to create a supportive learning environment that meets the unique needs of each student.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, utilizing evidence-based teaching strategies and accommodations to promote language development, literacy skills, and academic growth.
  • Assess students' communication abilities and learning needs, including auditory skills, speech and language development, and social-emotional skills, to inform instructional planning and intervention.
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with hearing loss, setting goals and objectives aligned with their educational and communication goals.
  • Utilize specialized instructional materials, technology, and assistive devices to support students' access to the curriculum and facilitate communication in both educational and social settings.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and other related service providers to coordinate services, modify curriculum, and ensure the implementation of accommodations and modifications as outlined in students' IEPs.
  • Provide consultation and support to parents and caregivers, offering strategies and resources to promote communication development and facilitate home-school collaboration.
  • Monitor students' progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed, regularly assessing outcomes and documenting student performance to guide decision-making and goal setting.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current on best practices in Deaf Education and assistive technology to enhance instructional effectiveness and improve outcomes for students.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Valid West Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Deaf Education or eligibility for licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Deaf Education or Special Education with a concentration in Deaf Education.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting, including knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modalities.
  • Familiarity with cochlear implants, hearing aids, FM systems, and other assistive technology devices used by students with hearing loss.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Understanding of the impact of hearing loss on language development, academic achievement, and social-emotional well-being.
