Virtual Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist - Michigan
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education, Deaf Education, or a related field from an accredited program
• Active Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SL) endorsement issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
• Demonstrated communication proficiency aligned with student needs (e.g., American Sign Language, Listening and Spoken Language, or total communication)
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience (school-based and/or teletherapy preferred)
• Direct experience with IEP development, MARSE rules, and virtual specialized instruction is a plus
• Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills
• Comfortable using teletherapy platforms, visual accessibility software, and remote learning tools
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Instruction
• Provide virtual direct specialized instruction and consultative services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students across grade levels
• Review audiological evaluations and language assessments to draft, implement, and track individualized IEP goals
• Deliver dynamic, remote instruction adapted to the student’s primary communication modality (auditory-verbal, visual/ASL, or multimodal)
• Monitor academic and linguistic progress using data to guide instructional modifications
Collaboration & Support
• Partner closely with general education teachers, special education staff, parents, and educational interpreters to ensure classroom access
• Recommend and train school teams on environmental acoustic modifications, assistive listening devices (FM/HAT systems), and closed-captioning tools
• Participate actively in virtual IEP meetings, 504 plan reviews, and multidisciplinary team evaluations
Documentation & Compliance
• Maintain thorough and timely documentation of service logs, IEP goal updates, and progress reports
• Ensure all instructional practices and compliance documents strictly adhere to Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), district policies, and federal guidelines
• Complete comprehensive educational evaluations and eligibility summaries as required
Technology & Digital Accessibility
• Utilize virtual platforms, interactive whiteboards, and visual aids to deliver accessible, engaging remote instruction
• Adapt printed and digital learning materials into accessible formats suited for visual or enhanced-auditory learning
• Assist local school personnel and families with platform setup and remote technology troubleshooting
Advocacy & Empowerment
• Empower students to build self-advocacy skills, understand their hearing needs, and effectively request accommodations
• Provide educational resources and strategies to families and educators regarding Deaf culture, language acquisition, and hearing loss impacts
