Step into a rewarding position supporting students as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Norfolk area. This full-time, contract role runs from late August through early June, with 37.5 hours per week and an itinerant caseload. You'll have the opportunity to collaborate with a strong interdisciplinary team and empower students to access communication and learning in inclusive environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, focusing on academics, functional skills, and communication aligned with their IEPs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education programs in partnership with families, special education, and general education staff.
  • Adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and classroom settings to ensure accessibility, including the use of assistive listening devices and AAC systems.
  • Support communication development using ASL, spoken language, auditory training, or total communication, tailored to each student’s needs.
  • Regularly assess student progress with both formal and informal tools, adjusting instructional strategies as needed.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to facilitate inclusion and foster effective classroom accommodations.
  • Promote self-advocacy, social skills, and independence among students within school environments.
  • Coordinate with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and related service providers to ensure proper maintenance and use of hearing technology.

Qualifications:

  • Virginia Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification required.
  • Proficient in communication methods such as ASL, auditory training, or total communication.
  • Experience supporting children and youth with hearing differences, preferably in a school or itinerant setting.
  • Strong skills in collaboration, organization, and adaptability.
  • Committed to fostering inclusive and accessible education.
