Make an impact in the lives of students as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing working under a contract assignment for the 2026-2027 school year. This full-time itinerant role (37.5 hours/week) is based near Portsmouth, VA with a start date in late August and concluding in early June. As an integral part of student support, you’ll collaborate closely with families, general education staff, and specialists to support students with hearing challenges across multiple school sites.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Valid Virginia Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs for deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Skilled in a range of communication modalities: ASL, spoken language, total communication, or auditory training.
  • Familiarity with assistive listening devices and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC).
  • Strong collaboration and consultation skills with educators, families, and support personnel.
  • Background in adapting instructional materials and classroom environments for accessibility.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Deliver direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, targeting academic, communication, and functional goals.
  • Design and adapt curricula to maximize accessibility for individual student needs.
  • Teach and reinforce communication, self-advocacy, and independent skills.
  • Coordinate with audiologists, SLPs, and other specialists for the consistent use of hearing technology.
  • Consult with school teams to promote inclusion and share effective accommodations.
  • Use assessments to monitor growth and refine teaching accordingly.
