As a dedicated educator, you’ll provide individualized, high-quality instruction tailored to your students’ needs in a vibrant elementary environment. You will work collaboratively with specialists and families to ensure each child’s success and growth, fostering a classroom rich in communication, inclusion, and creative learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct instruction in reading, writing, math, and core subjects, with materials adapted for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and aligned with Texas TEKS.
- Teach in the communication modality specified in each student’s IEP (e.g., American Sign Language, spoken language, total communication).
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education programs (IEPs) alongside related service providers and the program coordinator.
- Assess student progress through both formal and informal measures, and prepare progress reports for each grading period.
- Maintain a classroom that optimizes visual learning, language access, and supports use of relevant technology (FM systems, sound fields, etc.).
- Regularly communicate with families about student progress and expectations, and actively participate in ARD/IEP meetings.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with IDEA, state, and district special education regulations.
- Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and program trainings.
Qualifications:
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (EC-12) certification, or eligibility to obtain prior to the start date.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and/or listening and spoken language methodology, as appropriate for students served.
- Experience developing and delivering IEPs.
- Knowledge of language and literacy development in deaf and hard of hearing children.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior teaching in a self-contained DHH classroom.
- Early elementary literacy instruction.
- Familiarity with RDSPD program structures.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.
