About the Role:
This role focuses on providing specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, helping them develop communication, language, and academic skills. The DHH Teacher will collaborate with general education staff, interpreters, and families to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Students identified as DHH have hearing differences that impact their ability to process language and access instruction, requiring targeted educational strategies and accommodations.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field
- Active Florida teaching certification with endorsement in Deaf or Hard of Hearing (K-12)
- Completion of required coursework in areas such as audiology, assistive listening devices, and education of students with hearing impairments
- Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication modalities preferred
- Previous school-based experience preferred
- Ability to pass background check and fingerprinting
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
Job Duties:
- Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Collaborate with interpreters, general education teachers, and related service providers
- Adapt curriculum and classroom materials to meet student needs
- Support communication development using appropriate methods (ASL, spoken language, or total communication)
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation
- Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions
